Student Resources

The Dean of Students Office provides support and resources to assist students throughout their time at the University of Maryland. We’re here to help you navigate the complexities of university life, identify solutions, and connect you with other programs and services at UMD that can provide additional support.

Need assistance? Let us know how we can help. We can be reached during regular business hours, Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Contact us by phone at 301.314.8484 or via email at deanofstudents@umd.edu. Messages received after hours will be responded to on the next business day.

Students should always start with their academic advisor for any academic concern (e.g., considering a leave of absence, seeking to drop a class, change a grade type, explore course repetition and grade replacement options, express concerns with a faculty member).

Tutoring & academic success

Need help with math? Are you trying to write the best paper possible? UMD has lots of resources to help. Check out the guide to tutoring and other academic success resources, developed by the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

Illness or family emergency

If you miss class due to illness or family emergency, start by getting in contact with your professors and explaining that you need an extension on any assignments or class work assigned during the time of your absence. If you face any issues, please let our office know and we can work on contacting your instructors.

Personal challenges affecting coursework

If you are facing mental or emotional challenges that affect your ability to make progress in your classes, you should start by contacting your professors to let them know what is going on and to find out if they are willing to provide any accommodations. You don’t have to provide details, but you should share enough to help them understand what you are going through. Having a note or documentation from a therapist may also be helpful. If you face any issues, please let our office know and we can help you navigate this process.

Leave of absence or withdrawal

Students must submit a completed withdrawal form to the Office of the Registrar no later than the last day of classes. In exceptional cases, a retroactive withdrawal may be granted based on documented requests in which extenuating circumstances occur. Students may request a withdrawal at any time between the first and the last day of classes for the semester.

Re-enrollment at UMD

The Student Success Office is the place to start your re-enrollment process. Their website will provide you with the re-enrollment application and the other steps you need to complete in order to reapply. You can also contact them at  301-405-2793 or rr-admit@umd.edu

Accessibility & Disability Service

Accessibility & Disability Service works with undergraduate and graduate students to determine reasonable disability accommodations during their tenure at the University of Maryland.

Paratransit

Part of Shuttle-UM, Paratransit is a curb-to-curb, on-demand shuttle subscription service available to students, faculty and staff with temporary and permanent disabilities.

The Dean of Students Office is committed to an educational environment where every student thrives, and to providing both short-term emergency support and long-term support services that address basic needs crises and impact health, well-being, belonging, and academic success. Visit the Basic Needs Security & Resources page for more information.

Assistance is available for students experiencing an unexpected critical situation and need immediate financial support. The grant is designed to help address a student’s unforeseen, short-term financial crisis or catastrophic life event that requires financial resources to solve and, if not addressed, could prohibit a student from remaining enrolled and persisting toward graduation at UMD.

Emergency Meal Swipes are available to assist students who are experiencing food insecurity challenges and/or an economic emergency. The swipes provide 10 meals at any of the three dining halls on campus. Students can complete a Basic Needs Assistance Form to request support. This resource is only available to students who are currently experiencing a financial emergency and have exhausted other options. Emergency Meal Swipes are not to be used as a cost-savings strategy, and cannot replace financial aid and other resources. Note: the meal swipe program is not available during breaks since the dining halls are closed. The Emergency Meal Swipes are made possible thanks to the Student Government Association and Dining Services.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center provides comprehensive support services that promote the personal, social, and academic success of UMD students.
