Meet Our Scholars

Portrait of Mahfouz

Mahfouz Afada was a transfer student from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill searching for a solid computer science education. Ever since then, he has engaged with the campus' various clubs and events, throwing himself into the large expanse and seeing what he wants to stick with. Mahfouz has found art club friends and soon-to-be game dev buddies, and he hopes to keep making these connections during my time here.

portrait of ZacheryZachery Meehan graduated from Bohemia Manor High School in Chesapeake City, MD in 2011. In 2012 he enlisted in the USAF as a jet engine mechanic on F16 aircraft. After separating in 2018 he began pursuing my education in the spring of 2019, which was put on hold in 2020 because of Covid-19. Zachery recently graduated from Cecil College with an associate's in Chemistry, and is currently pursuing my bachelors at UMD.

James Joseph (2022-2023 Scholar)

portrait of JamesStaff Sergeant James L. Joseph. was born in Haiti and raised in south Florida. James graduated high school in summer of 2012 and enlisted in the Marine Corps with his  brother in July of 2014. After graduating basic training in October 2014, James was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. He served as the administrator for over 30,000 Marines aboard the station, ensuring correct and timely allocations of entitlements and record keeping and management. James was promoted from Private First Class to Sergeant in three years time. It was there that he met his wife in January of 2016 and  got married in December of 2017. In January 2018, James received orders to Headquarters Marine Corps, Quantico, VA where he served as the Non-commissioned Officer in Charge of Fiscal and Entitlements. In May of 2019, James applied for the Enlisted to Officer program, and was selected and attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) in January of 2020. In July 2020, he received orders to the University of Maryland. James was selected and promoted to Staff Sergeant in May 2021. James is currently a Junior majoring in Information Science; upon graduation in Fall 2022, he will earn a commission as a second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and resume my military career.

Carlos Fernandez (2018-2019 Scholar)

James Grace (2017-2018 Scholar)

portrait of JamesJames works as a carpenter/general construction tradesman, he is a full time student at the University of Maryland College Park (UMD) studying Civil Engineering, and in his free time he is an acting Scout Master and enthusiastic fisherman.

"I owe much of my success to the Veterans programs like these. And because of these programs I am able to work less and dedicate more time to stewardship and service to my community. I am able to study harder to maintain academic excellence, tutor fellow students, and be involved with extra-curricular activities such as ASCE, Concrete Canoe, and Steel bridge. I am also able to serve my community as a Scout Master with Troop 427 in Edgmere where I counsel merit badges of Citizenship in the Community, Nation, and World. Of course, all this motivates me to aspire to give back more and has stirred up the call to service to emerge and I intend to continue my military career with a commission in the U.S. Navy's Civil Engineer Corps upon graduation from UMD."

Kevin Elliott (2015-2016 Scholar)

headshotKevin is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management and expects to graduate in 2016. A three year veteran of the US Marine Corps, Kevin spent time in the service as an Aviation Ordnance Technician in Okinawa, Japan after finishing high school in Delaware. An active member of TerpVets, Kevin is also involved with the Student Wildlife Society and is Vice President of ENST (Environmental Science and Technology) Restore. He is often seen riding his skateboard around campus and helping people with Environmental Science classes in exchange for help with his math homework. Furthermore, he helps maintain the Apiary on campus but always makes sure to have enough time to grab free pizza with the Transfer 2 Terps community. When he finishes his degree, Kevin hopes to continue his service to our country as a National Park Service Ranger in the mountains.
