About the Terp Vets Alumni Veterans Endowed Scholarship
The Terp Vets Alumni Endowed Scholarship was established by three University of Maryland student veteran leaders in 2016 in order to support future generations of student veterans active in Terp Vets.
About the Fund
The Terp Vets Alumni Scholarship provides scholarships for student veterans active in Terp Vets, the Universitys student veteran organization. Preference is given to student veterans who have either exhausted or are nearing the end of their GI Bill benefits.

After serving six years in the Marine Corps, Matt decided to pursue his B.A. and M.A. in international relations at the University of Maryland. During his time at UMD, Matt volunteered at the International Rescue Committee and participated in multiple TerpVets activities. After three years in the workforce, Matt has returned to UMD to pursue an MBA with a specialization in finance. Matt intends to use the tools taught at UMD to educate military members on financial literacy and shift the financial mindset from reactive to proactive.

Enicia Porter (2024-2025 Scholar)
Enicia Porter is an Air Force Veteran studying Business Analytics in the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Next to coding, her favorite activity is running. Fun fact, Enicia once ran from another country and back. In 2018, she did the Detroit Marathon which has you run from downtown Detroit, MI, USA to Windsor, ON, Canada, and back. Enicia completed the marathon in under 6 hours.
Justin Goodwin (2023-2024 Scholar)
Justin Goodwin is a United States Air Force veteran of 8.5 years of service as an Electrical Power Production Craftsman separating at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served at Spangdahlem AB Germany, Vandenberg AFB California, Osan AB South Korea, and deployed to Kuwait, Jordan, and Bulgaria. Justin is most proud of his dedication to leading, mentoring, and taking care of the Airman that he supervised, turning fresh and young technicians into subject matter experts that the Air Force depend on. Justin is also proud of the direct impact he had on the missions he supported while deployed, leading Airmen in supporting the mission, our NATO allies, and making sure that every pilot safely made it home to their families.
Joseph Hartner (2021-2023 Scholar)
Joseph Hartner works with the VSL team at the University as well as manages TerpVets as the Vice President and Treasurer. Joseph also volunteers for Mission 22 helping struggling Veterans and provides program help and assistance. Joseph's academic goals are to graduate UMD with honor roll and continue education in the Information Science Master's school.
Nicholas Culwell (2020-2021 Scholar)
Nicholas Culwell is currently a senior at the University of Maryland, pursuing a degree in Environmental Science and Policy, with a concentration in Land Use. For the past year, Nicholas held the position of TERPVETS President, and he is a member of the Vice President of Student Affairs Student Advisory Council. Prior to attending the University of Maryland, Nicholas served in the US Coast Guard for 5 years. Since my separation from active duty service, Nicholas has continued his military career through the capacity of the Coast Guard Reserves.
Yaggya Thappa 2019-2020 Scholar
Yaggya is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology at the School of Public Health. As a Health Care Specialist for five years in the US Army, Yaggya provided primary edical care, emergency medical treatments and preventive health trainings at garrison and in deployment in Kuwait and Poland. Yaggya hails from Nepal and a long line of military family members. His grandfather served in the Indian Armed Force and his father served in the British Army. Upon graduation, he intends to continue providing service to veterans as a Rehabilitation Therapist. Yaggya and his wife are expecting their first child in a few months.
Kenth Rivera 2018-2019 Scholar
Kenth Rivera served 4 years in the Navy as an Aviation Structural Mechanic working on maintaining helicopters. Currently a Sophomore majoring in Aerospace Engineering with a Pathways internship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where (fingers crossed), he hopes to work as an engineer there after graduation. Kenth was born in El Salvador and moved to Texas when he was 13. He has been working on the testing of a mass spectrometer at NASA that will be launched in November. Kenth is here with his wife and two young boys!
Hazel Mouayang 2016-2017 Scholar
Hazel Mouyang spent four years in the U.S. Navy providing security for high valued assets. A California native, she is majoring in Criminal Justice and volunteers for the HSC Pediatric Hospital. During her time in the Navy, Hazel was trained as a Sexual Assault Advocate and is passionate about helping victims of sexual assault. And of course, Hazel is active in TerpVets!
