About The Matthew Watson Memorial Scholarship
The Matthew W. Watson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Matthew Watson by his dear family and friends.
Matthew Winter Watson was a loving son, brother, and friend. Matt had a wonderful sense of humor, was a passionate jazz saxophone player and member of the Centennial High School track and football teams. Matt entered the University of Maryland as a freshman in the Fall of 2005. He was a 20 year-old sophomore economics major and a member of Theta Chi Fraternity when he died suddenly in a car accident on May 5, 2007 in College Park, Maryland. In order to preserve Matt's memory, his family and friends established an endowed fund to support undergraduate students at the University.
About The Fund
The Matthew W. Watson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in July 2007 by friends and family of the late Matthew W. Watson, a University sophomore who died suddenly in May 2007.
This scholarship will leave a lasting impact on the University of Maryland community by providing annual scholarships of at least $1,000 for an incoming freshman or transfer student at the University who has graduated from Centennial High School in Howard County, Maryland.

James Hawkins has lived in Howard County, Maryland since he was in fourth grade. He’s been a part of the band program since then, playing trombone every semester all the way to the end of high school. James joined Tri-M Music Honors Society in tenth grade in order to do service through the lens of music, and continued participation through his senior year. Starting in middle school, James gained an interest in social studies. He studied mostly history until tenth grade, when he picked up government and politics, and then international relations in eleventh grade. James also joined the National History Honors Society in tenth grade so he had an avenue to do more history-related work, and has continued in it through the end of high school. Also in tenth grade, James found an interest in computer science while taking AP Computer Science Principles, which he has continued to pursue academically since then, and into University.

Pravas Dhakal (2020 - 2024 Scholar)
I have had a good first year at UMD. I ended my first semester with a 3.73 GPA and hopefully will have a better GPA for the spring semester. Since I am at home for the year, I picked up a part-time job at a bakery. It has been good to be up at moving at work while having to sit down all day for school. Along with that, I have tried to participate in some school clubs to experience more UMD culture and meet new people with similar interests. I have been active in a music club called The Terrapin Label, and some cultural clubs like the Chinese Student Association and Nepali Student Association. Overall, these small new additions to my life during the pandemic have helped me with staying resilient. In a time where being social is a hard thing, making new friends in the form of coworkers or meeting new people at clubs has helped me stay social. I hope all is well with the Watson family during these trying times.
Annie Barnes (2020-2023 Scholar)
This past year has brought me new opportunities, despite college being in an online setting. I have been living in my sorority house, which allowed me to spend a lot of time with my close friends. I also was elected to be V.P of house management, which has been a really great way for me to be involved with my sorority and meet new people. In the fall semester, I began volunteering in a research lab under a bioengineering professor. This has been a great experience for me because I am working in person for her, so it has given me a way to keep routine during online school. Over the summer, I will be working in her lab and hopefully starting my own research project. I am also very excited for the upcoming year because I just applied to study abroad in Madrid for spring 2022. I am so excited about these programs opening up again! Overall, while this year was certainly unexpected, I still have really enjoyed my time.

As a Hearing and Speech Sciences major, she has joined the pre-professional chapter of NSSLHA, National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association, at UMD. Julia aspires to become a speech-language pathologist and very much enjoys participating in UMD's Intern for a Day program. She has gotten to shadow professionals in the field of speech-language pathology each semester. Julia is also in the process of adding a Spanish minor, and plans to study abroad. She continues to love volunteering around campus with various organizations like TerpThon and Terps Against Hunger, running, going to the UMD football basketball games, and meeting new people.
