About The J. Logan Schutz Legacy
Retired Army Colonel J. Logan Schutz was no stranger to service and sacrifice. A World War II Veteran, Colonel Schutz served 24 years in the United States Army as an officer and a trusted advisor to Generals and leaders. As the U.S. Aide de Camp for General Wilson, Theatre Commander of the Mediterranean, Colonel Schutz met several world leaders, including Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower.
J. Logan Schutz Legacy, Bio
His final assignment was as the Commander of the 8th Cavalry in Korea on the DMZ, where he could look across the border at Korean artillery. A 1938 graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics and a 1940 graduate with a Master’s of Science degree in Agriculture, Colonel Schutz has had a long love affair with the University. He retired early from the Army to accept the Director of Alumni Affairs position in 1964, retiring in 1981 after 17 years. He was the Alumni Director Emeritus on the Alumni Board of Governors.
Colonel Schutz received numerous awards recognizing his passion and commitment to the University of Maryland. In 2001, he was named the Ralph Tyser Medallion Award recipient. In November 2012, he received the first University of Maryland Veterans Alumni Award. This scholarship honors and celebrates our Veterans who have given their time and talent to make the campus and our country stronger.
Colonel Schutz was a great friend of the University of Maryland, a proud Omicron Delta Kappa past president, Sigma Nu president, and SGA officer. He left behind a strong legacy of leadership, devotion, and commitment.

Since starting at the University of Maryland College Park, Christopher Studgeon achieved a 3.6 GPA in his first semester, surpassing his own expectations. He has been actively involved in flag football and basketball, and has attended meetings for both the BSU and the Black Engineering Society. This semester, Christopher is excited to take his involvement to the next level by joining the paintball club, becoming an official member of the Black Engineering Society, participating in Terps Racing, and engaging more actively across campus.

Brittanie Reed (2023-2024 Scholar)
Brittanie Reed is a senior at the University of Maryland, majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She completed her first two years of college at Montgomery Community College, graduating with an Associates Degree in General Studies with a Social Science focus. Though her time at UMD has been brief, she has been able to contribute to the multicultural scene on campus through the Nyumburu Cultural Center. She has worked as the host of News Break, the show hosted at the center which gives Black students on campus a voice to talk about current events and share their opinions. Brittanie assisted in hosting numerous different events, as well as becoming the President of their S.O.U.L. club, which was founded to uplift and support Black women on campus. Additionally she is a part of the Karabelle Pizzigati Initiative in the School of Public Policy. This fellowship offered her an opportunity to work with DC Action, which is a corporation focused on addressing a variety of issues surrounding child advocacy with her specifically focusing on youth experiencing homelessness. Apart from her studies, Brittanie is a lead teacher for Kinder Care (Champions) in Bowie, MD. One of her passions is working with children, so she is blessed to be able to do work that has a positive impact for them and children in the PG area.

Julia is a double major in Kinesiology and Psychology, aiming to complete a pre-PT (physical therapy) track before graduating. Her plans are to go on to graduate school and complete a DPT program to begin practicing as a pediatric physical therapist. Her interests include practicing wushu (a Chinese martial art), hiking, and teaching Taekwondo at her home dojo.
Samantha Frazier (2018 Scholar)
Samantha Frazier is a junior Family Science major, French minor from Laurel, MD. She is a Resident Assistant in South Campus Commons as well as has been an Orientation Advisor for the past two years. Samantha is a recent graduate of the College Park Scholars Arts Program and is involved in several organizations on campus. She is a cabinet member for the Student Success Leadership Council, a member of the Black Student Union and the Vice President of Programming for the campus organization Sisterhood of Unity and Love (SOUL). She is planning on pursuing a career in counseling psychology after undergrad.
