Ryan grew up in Marlboro, New Jersey, and chose to defer a year from the University of Maryland to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps as a reservist at age 18. During his gap year, he accomplished his life goal of becoming a U.S. Marine and graduated first in his class at his aircraft maintenance schoolhouse before volunteering to serve an additional four months of active duty at his unit. While his time in the Marine Corps has had an indescribable impact on his life, he now claims Maryland as his home as he sets his sights on graduating with a bachelor’s degree in information science.
