About The Coaches
The Coaches Dr. Robert Tyler, Ph.D., and Mike Dowhower Fencing Scholarship was established by University of Maryland Fencing Team alumni. The scholarship supports current Fencing Club members and honors Coaches Tyler and Dowhower for their dedication and significant contributions to fencing at Maryland.

Noah Hanssen (2021 Scholar)
I am a transfer student in a wheelchair studying at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. I have been fencing since high school and compete internationally with the USA Parafencing Team. Since coming to the University of Maryland, I have acted as the Sabre Team Captain, and in December became the Vice President of UMD Club Fencing. Outside of fencing, I have been involved in a variety of volunteer political work, and interned for Delegate Mary Lehman at the Maryland General Assembly.

I was elected to be President of UMD Fencing Club for 2019 - 2020 school year, and I have been attending several officers meeting with the current President and discussing with him about President duties so that I will be more prepared for next semester. I also passed Red Cross CPR and First Aid certificate and I will become certified safety officer in the near future. Academic-wise, I am currently a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Sustainability.
