Samuel McGranahan has taken full advantage of his undergraduate experience at the University of Maryland. From day one, he began as a student manager for the lacrosse team, assisting with all team-related operations from practices to games and travel. He committed to early morning practices and missed classes for road games throughout his freshman year. Although no longer a manager, Samuel continues to work several nights a week as an equipment assistant. In the spring of his freshman year, he joined Beta and formed some of the best friendships of his life. That summer, Samuel worked in the District Office of Congressman Steny Hoyer, where he gained valuable professional experience in government. During his sophomore fall, he joined the Federal Fellows program, where he gained significant insight into energy and environmental policy. In December of his sophomore year, Samuel was elected Vice President of External Affairs of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), a role through which he developed leadership skills and a deeper understanding of life in general. He organized weekly cleanups in Old Town, attracting as many as 500 participants, many of which were hosted outside of the Beta chapter house. During and after the shutdown, he stood with his fellow fraternities against the university, opposing what he viewed as unjust actions and violations of constitutional rights. Along with the IFC president, Samuel met with several congressional offices representing Maryland districts to advocate for legislation aimed at preventing a similar shutdown of Greek life in the future. In his sophomore spring, Samuel worked three days a week at the lobbying firm Manis Canning & Associates, gaining hands-on experience in lobbying and government affairs. This past summer, he worked in political organizing at the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), where he helped build a unique union organizing database to support more firefighters in gaining union-related benefits. Samuel plans to return to the IAFF this coming summer and study abroad in Italy during the spring.

Utsha Costa (2022-2023 Scholar)
Utsha is a senior at the University of Maryland pursing a dual degree in Finance and Information Systems. Throughout my academic career, I have always worked part-time jobs to support myself and partially pay for tuition and necessities. My summer analyst position at Morgan Stanley during my junior summer has earned me a a full-time position there upon graduation.
On campus, I have deep gratitude for Beta Theta Pi for giving me access to their rich culture and brotherhood. It is through Beta, that I was able to show my leadership skills on campus. This past spring, I was elected to the Chair for Diversity and Inclusion. I used the position of my office to encourage diverse recruitment during our spring pledge class. Thus, to encompass it all, Beta Theta Pi carved into me a strong sense of character and undying brotherhood.

Jack Wyman (2021-2022 Scholar)
My name is Jack Wyman. I am currently a junior at the University of Maryland studying Supply Chain Management and Marketing. Due to the pandemic, supply chain has become a much more relevant topic, and it makes me eager to go out there and mitigate any issues related to that. I am proudly serving as President of the Delta Omega Chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Our chapter is in a unique situation, as we are currently under a revitalization. We were able to get a fresh start as a chapter with new faces and leadership in order to become a successful chapter again. I was the only member from the old group who decided to stay and develop this chapter. Through my leadership, we were able to double the size of our chapter in less than a year. As a leader, it is essential to understand everyone who is involved, build robust relationships with each member, and do all that I can do to provide the best experience for members. As for my academic pursuits, I would like to be more involved in the supply chain and/or marketing industries. I am super honored to have received the Beta Theta Pi Scholarship and I cannot wait to see where this chapter goes.
