Meet Our Scholars

Jessica Matloub

Jessica Matloub’s four years at the University of Maryland have been some of the most rewarding and transformative of her life. As an eager freshman, she quickly immersed herself in the UMD community through College Park Scholars and The Every Child Project (TECP). Within the Business, Society, and the Economy (BSE) Scholars program, Jessica served as a Scholars Ambassador, representing the program, and as both a Peer Mentor and Peer Mentor Captain, where she helped freshmen transition into college life. She was honored with the Scholars Academic Achievement Award upon graduating from BSE.Jessica discovered TECP at the First Look Fair, where she found opportunities to tutor and take on various leadership roles. In her senior year, she became President of TECP, overseeing communication between the executive board, the school, tutors, and families while leading new organizational initiatives. Another highlight of Jessica's college experience was joining Alpha Epsilon Phi (AEPhi), where she held several chair positions, including philanthropy, scholarship, mental health, and Circle of Sisterhood. She was also honored to serve as the Chapter President, a role that significantly developed her confidence, communication, and leadership skills.Jessica’s college journey also led her to explore her religion through the Maimonides Fellowship with UMD Meor, a leadership program that broadened her perspectives and deepened her critical thinking. Her experiences abroad, including studying in Madrid and working at the Wonder School in Tel Aviv through Onward Israel, expanded her global awareness and reinforced her passion for education. As she finishes her senior year, Jessica is completing her studies in Human Development and Hearing and Speech Sciences. She plans to pursue graduate school to earn her Master’s in Education and is grateful for the lasting impact her UMD experiences will have on her future.

Past Scholars

Maizie Rubin (2022-2024 Scholar)

Maizie Rubin is a human development major with a minor in sociology. She also just applied to the disabilities studies minor. Her Granny's career was centered around caring for children. When her Granny passed away, she was most remembered for the impact she left on children's lives. Maize is inspired by her Granny with her major and minor choices at the University of Maryland. Maizie recently had an internship designing a free preschool program for students living in Prince George's county. The goal of this program is to backtrack some of the disparities felt when students, who grew up like her in an area like her’s, enter the school system.

Christina Gianesello (2021-2022 Scholar)

I have been a member of Aephi since my freshman year of college. I've met many girls with the same interests as me and have loved being a part of such an inclusive community. As a double major in Psychology and Criminal Justice & Criminology, I hope to attend graduate school and become a clinical psychologist and a victim advocate.

Talia Shemony (2020-2021 Scholar)

Talia Shemony is a sophomore at the University of Maryland at College Park majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
