About the Fund

The Latine Student Advocacy Scholarship was established by University of Maryland alumni to provide scholarship support for students who participate in programs and initiatives that benefit the Latine student community.

 

Meet Our Scholars

hennifer Celestino

Jhennifer Celestino Alva is a senior majoring in public health science with a minor in disability studies, with a strong interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. She currently serves as the co-president of the Coalition of Latinx Organizations and the vice-president of the Latinx Pre-Health Society. Jhennifer is also an active member of the Latinx Cultural Committee. In her free time, she is dedicated to supporting the Latinx community by volunteering as a translator and interpreter in clinics, helping to bridge language barriers and ensure access to healthcare for all.

Astrid Mendoza (2023-2024 Scholar)

Astrid Mendoza is a sophomore psychology major with a human development minor interested in pursuing a career in counseling psychology. She currently serves as the president of Migrating Shells, a student org supporting and advocating for undocumented and immigrant students, and volunteers in different multicultural settings. Astrid is also heavily involved in UMD’s psychology department as an undergraduate program manager, an undergraduate research assistant, and undergraduate diversity, equity, and inclusion assistant.

Claudia Aguilar (2021-2022 Scholar)

Claudia Aguilar is an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland studying Studio Art with - Graphic Design. She specializes in conceptual design skills and illustration. Her work is known for its thoughtfulness and creativity. In her time on campus, she has been involved with extracurricular activities such as the Maryland Latin Dance Club where she is the current President, creating a welcoming environment for students to learn about the Latin dance culture and connecting with one another from different backgrounds.

Karen Vanegas (2015-2016 Scholar)

Karen Vanegas is a senior pursuing a double major in Broadcast Journalism and Government and Politics. She has interned for the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.
