Past Scholars

Joanne Kang (2024-2025 Scholar)

After deciding to start school late to prioritize military training, Joanne “Jo” Kang came straight to school to focus on her education, making it her goal to pursue a nursing career. Now as a reservist, Jo is doing her best to balance a military-school life, and thanks to everyone that is supporting her, she’s been considered for a full-time staff position as an HR specialist at her unit. Hopefully, later on in both her civilian and military career, Jo will be able to become a nurse that can help as many people as she can all around the world.

Jessica Coutee (2023-2024 Scholar)

Upon graduating from Peabody Magnet High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, Jessica enlisted in the United States Army and served for six years as a 68S Preventive Medicine Specialist. After separation, she participated in The Warrior Scholars Project at Texas A&M and is now confidently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Maryland. In her pursuit of knowledge she has conducted research in the Yale University's Muñoz Lab that focused on discovering the evolutionary trade-offs of faster feeding methods in Salamanders. She has also interned at the Second Chance Wildlife Center to gain hands-on experience caring for local wildlife. Her goal is to continue to develop the skills needed to open and manage her own rehabilitation center.
