BETA Team

Home BETA Team

Led by the Dean of Students, the Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment (BETA) Team intervenes to provide support for students, faculty, and staff who raise concern about their potential for harm to themselves or others. The BETA Team will assess the potential risk to personal and campus safety that might result from the actions of individuals, will connect individuals in need with appropriate resources, and will monitor compliance with required support plans.

The team is charged with the following actions:

  1. Collecting information about individuals who demonstrate, through current or past behavior, conduct or expression that they may pose a safety risk to either themselves or the campus community
  2. Connecting information that is collected into an assessment of risk that may exist
  3. Preventing possible harm by recommending appropriate action to either assist an individual in fulfilling their obligations as a student or employee, or to remove an individual from the campus community.

We bring expertise from various functional areas -- including public safety (policing), mental health (psychiatry and social work), counseling (psychology), student conduct, student affairs, faculty affairs, and human resources -- to assess concerning behavior and to develop strategies to support the well-being of students, faculty, and staff.

If you are concerned about the welfare of a member of the university community, including students, faculty, and staff, and this is a non-emergency, we encourage you to complete a Care Referral to report your concern. If you have an imminent concern for someone based on a threat of harm to self or others, call 911 or the University of Maryland Police at 301.405.3333. This includes emergencies such as possession of a weapon, violence, destruction of property, or suicidal ideation.

Early intervention is important. See something, say something, do something. We invite you to review our resource on how to assist those in distress.
