Melissa Davis

2019-2020 Scholar

Melissa Davis lives in Hagerstown, Maryland. She grew up living with her mom, her aunt and her two older brothers. For the 2019-2020 school year she is a senior at the University of Maryland, pursuing a Biology degree in Neurology & Physiology. She is also a member of the Universities Honors College. Melissa will be graduating in May 2020 after which she will take a gap year before applying to medical school. Over the last several years at UMD she has worked in a research lab on campus where she helps graduate and undergraduate students study the molecular mechanisms for sex determination in c. elegans. Additionally, she volunteers at a local park in Hyattsville MD where she works with other UMD students to remove invasive plants. For the past several years Davis has been a member of a student organization called Terp Thon. Through Terp Thon she has helped raise money for Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC and helped plan an annual Dance Marathon in the spring where over 2,000 students stand on their feet for 12 hours to represent the length of a typical nurse’s shift.
