Sophomore Cell Biology and Genetics major Joanna Chang is a pre-med student in the Integrated Life Sciences (ILS) Honors Program at University of Maryland (UMD). She serves as an Honors Ambassador for the Honors College and is a peer mentor for ILS. Joanna is part of the 2024-2025 cohort in the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) program, working on her internship project titled, "Identifying Trends in the Production and Use of Cosmetics by Analyzing Industry and Consumer Inquiries." She is involved in UMD's One Tent Health, serving as a volunteer to provide free HIV screenings in HIV-burdened communities in Washington, D.C.. With her experiences in public health research and community service, she intends on pursuing an MD/PhD to become the healthcare professional and researcher she envisions herself to be. Apart from her scientific pursuits, Joanna is a serving member of the Kharis Campus Ministry praise team. Moreover, with her passion for teaching, she works as a SAT math tutor, tutoring high school students in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area. Lastly, as a Korean-American immigrant, she has contributed to her community by acting as a lecturer and writer to educate the next generation about the history and culture of the Korean cuisine and their immigration story.
