Hyojin Kuan

2020 - 2021 Scholar

I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea moved to the DMV area 9 years ago.I came here with no English so it took me some time to learn the language before I started my degree and this is the main reason why I am currently in school getting my Bachelor's at the age of 32.

The field I was in back in Korea was about bodyguarding and customer services because I used to work at a concert, baseball, and soccer stadium; I was a gate manager who was in charge of rotating bodyguards and taking care of the main gate dealing with most violent customers so it is still challenging for me to major in stem major.

The main reason why I decided to major in bioengineering is to learn ways to help my mom and people like my mom; my mom had a miscarriage issue which caused her losing almost 10 babies before giving a birth of me and because of the miscarriage had to have a uterus removal surgery. From living with her, I learned what kind of life it is without an important organ. I want to help people who have to go through the same situations as my mom and living without an organ or organs. Therefore, I am very interested in organoids and implants as well as biomaterials.

My goal after graduation is to get a job related to those fields and then I might go back to school for a higher degree to acknowledge more about the fields. I am not currently involved in any clubs or leadership programs yet so the academic pursuit is the only part I can talk about for now, unfortunately.
