Freshcon
FreshCon stands as the university's premier welcome event, specifically designed to prepare Black students for both academic and professional success. Organized by SSLC, this pivotal event takes place annually in August, coinciding with the University of Maryland’s new student welcome weekend. Since its inception in 2013, FreshCon has experienced significant growth, evolving into a cornerstone of support and empowerment for the Black student community. Since its inception in 2013, FreshCon has grown significantly, with the 2019 event being the first to receive sponsorship from PepsiCo.
Success Hour
IIn collaboration with the University Career Center and the President’s Promise, SSLC organizes Success Hour during the Fall and Spring career fairs. This event provides students with a unique opportunity to network with representatives from a variety of companies across multiple industries, all of whom are eager to engage with candidates from diverse backgrounds. It serves as a platform for fostering meaningful connections and enhancing career opportunities for students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
NetNite
During Homecoming week, SSLC hosts NetNite, an event designed to foster meaningful connections between alumni and current students. This gathering provides valuable insights on how students can effectively prepare for academic and professional success while reinforcing a culture of excellence. By facilitating networking opportunities and knowledge-sharing, Netnite plays a pivotal role in supporting students' personal and career development.
Gift of Giving Gala
The Gift of Giving Gala is an annual event hosted by the Student Success Leadership Council in order to highlight Black students, alumni, and faculty.
Several awards are presented at the the Gift of Giving Gala to honor the legacy of the first Black male and female students, Hiram Whittle and Elaine Johnson, the first Black faculty member, Lucia James, a prominent Black alumni, Aaron McGruder, and the influential nature that recent Black alumni have had on this campus and in their daily lives.
Through Gift of Giving Gala, we strive to retain more Black students at the University of Maryland by building a strong community, providing access to academic and financial resources, and promoting a thriving and engaging group of future industry leaders.
