About Colonel J. Logan Schutz

Retired Army Colonel J. Logan Schutz was no stranger to service and sacrifice. A World War II Veteran, Colonel Schutz served 24 years in the United States Army as an officer and a trusted advisor to Generals and leaders. As the U.S. Aide de Camp for General Wilson, Theatre Commander of the Mediterranean, Colonel Schutz met several world leaders including Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower. His final assignment was as the Commander of the 8th Cavalry in Korea on the DMZ where he could look across the border at Korean artillery. A 1938 graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics and a 1940 graduate with a Master’s of Science degree in Agriculture, Colonel Schutz has had a long love affair with the University. He took early retirement from the Army to accept the job of Director of Alumni Affairs in 1964 retiring in 1981 after 17 years. He was the Alumni Director Emeritus on the Alumni Board of Governors.

Colonel Schutz received numerous awards recognizing his passion and commitment to the University of Maryland. In 2001, he was named the Ralph Tyser Medallion Award recipient. In November 2012, he received the first University of Maryland Veterans Alumni Award. This award honors and celebrates our Veterans who have given of their time and talent to make the campus and our country stronger.

A proud Omicron Delta Kappa past president, Sigma Nu president, and SGA officer, Colonel Schutz was a great friend of the University of Maryland. He left behind a strong legacy of leadership, devotion and commitment.

About the Scholarship

The Colonel J. Logan Schutz Omicron Delta Kappa Leader of the Year Award was established in March 2004 by Colonel J. Logan Schutz and will be presented annually to the member of the Omicron Delta Kappa who best exemplifies the ideals of ODK leadership within one or more of the ODK principles: scholarship; athletics; campus or community service; social, or religious activities and campus government; journalism, speech and the mass media; creative and performing arts.

Each year, Sigma Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa selects one of its members as the Col. J. Logan Schutz Omicron Delta Kappa Leader of the Year. This person competes first on a regional basis and then nationally for the very prestigious award of ODK National Leader of the Year.
