About Kappa Alpha Psi Lucian Brown

Kappa Alpha Psi , a college Fraternity, now comprised of functioning Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the country, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision shared commonly by the late Revered Founders Elder Watson Diggs; John Milton Lee; Byron Kenneth Armstrong; Guy Levis Grant; Ezra Dee Alexander; Henry Tourner Asher; Marcus Peter Blakemore; Paul Waymond Caine; Edward Giles Irvin and George Wesley Edmonds.

It was the vision of these astute men that enabled them in the school year 1910 - 11, more specifically the night of January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, to sow the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is available to, and now enjoyed by, college men everywhere, regardless of their color, religion or national origin. It is a fact of which KAPPA ALPHA PSI is justly proud that the Constitution has never contained any clause which either excluded or suggested the exclusion of a man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or national origin. The Constitution of KAPPA ALPHA PSI is predicated upon, and dedicated to, the principles of achievement through a truly democratic Fraternity.

KAPPA ALPHA PSI Fraternity, relatively early, envisioned the modified attitudes of college administrators and administrations regarding certain frivolous activities previously identified with Greek letter organizations; and it initiated appropriate changes. Among the early changes brought about was the banning of paddling and other forms of physical abuse, and the introduction of constructive endeavors during pledgeship and probation. To date, KAPPA ALPHA PSI Fraternity is organizationally and administratively mature. It moves steadily toward a tomorrow of promise, productivity and influence.

About Lucian Ellison Brown

Roll Call.... the architect of the University of Maryland Chapter, the Theta Theta of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. chartering. A True & Noble Kappaman who "Toils and Strives" in Chapter Invisible. Lucian Ellison Brown was a Captain for the United States Army. Lucian was born on September 04, 1949 and was from Baltimore, Maryland. On November 27, 1981, he died from a medical illness at the age of 32.

For those 13 assembled college undergrads in the year 1974, "Big Brother Brownie" attired in his service Captain's uniform served as note that the coming twelve weeks would replenish all Scroller souls. An added measure of assurance was not lost on this motley crew of 'wannabees", when Lou informed them that he was responsible for logistics in the U.S. Army command at Fort Meade. One need only reflect for just a moment and see...even feel Captain Brown's composure being sorely tested, only to release a collective sigh of relief when he would declare "you all are unreal, man!"

Lucian Brown received the glorious Kappa traditions and rituals that is Kappa Alpha Psi at the Morgan State College Chapter, the Alpha Iota of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The native Baltimorean carried the company of generals, professionals, and those from uptown and downtown. It is easy to surmise that enjoyed people. He possessed an infectious sense of humor. It was a gutty deep-of-the-soul sort that seemed to beg of those within hearing range to join in. Ol' folks would say "he was a cut". In fact, upon hearing Lou address a person by the moniker "cutty" those close to him came to understand that was a tag of acceptance or that a Brown retort was coming.

Lucian Brown was connected to humanity. Whether directing the pledge-ship via parliamentary procedure, fraternal responsibility of service to others, or nuances of managing a Sweetheart Court, his sage advise could be counted on. His example was leadership. The occasions that he sacrificed personally for the new UMCP chapter were many! That ride back and forth on 95 must have given reason to many doubts that were left unsaid, Lucian Brown reflects the Good that is Kappa. Commitment & Service Above Self! Community.
