Silvana Montanola

2023 Scholar

Born and raised in Honduras, Silvana has had first-hand contact with a mixture of cultures and lived experiences which motivated her to pursue her studies with the Latinx community in the United States. Her current academic pursuits as a PhD student in Medical Anthropology include highlighting the vulnerabilities and agency of pregnant liminally legal Latinx women who access care by virtue of their unborn child in the DMV area. Silvana has been involved in her community as President and Graduate Representative of the Practicing Anthropology Student Association (PASA), as Graduate Representative for the Dean's Graduate Student Advisory Committee, and as a Graduate Representative for the Association for Political and Legal Anthropology. Silvana's dedication to community service and leadership has also led her to intern at CARECEN, the oldest immigrant rights non-profit organization in the DMV.  Silvana hopes to continue this commitment to both the University of Maryland and the community she has found here in the upcoming years.
