Lopes had a 42-year career in Emergency Management. He established and led the American Red Cross Disaster Education Program (1986-2004), then transitioned to become the Deputy Tsunami Program Manager for the National Weather Service where he served as Administrator of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program. After retirement in 2019, Lopes renewed his paramedic license and volunteers at a Clinic and the Fire/EMS Department in Montgomery County. He also has become a semi-professional photographer. He remains professionally engaged as the Co-Chair of the Tsunami Science & Technology Advisory Panel for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Science Advisory Board.
