2020-2021 Newcombe Scholar

Rachelle Bastien was born and raised in a modest family in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Originally enrolled in Montgomery Community College, Rachelle transferred to the University of Maryland in Spring 2020 majoring in Computer Science. A member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and making the Dean's list every semester, Rachelle has always been disciplined and hardworking when it comes to her academic work. An interest in software engineering arose when she realized how renal patients had little access to information that can help them take control of their conditions. Acknowledging the immense role of technology in Healthcare, she wishes to create software that can assist renal patients with tools to better manage their diet and health. Outside of academia, Rachelle provides services as a medical interpreter to reduce linguistic barriers between French-speaking patients and providers. She spends her leisure time reading, cooking, dancing, and working out.
