Mia Jocic

2024-2025 Scholar

On campus, Mia Jocic is involved in UMD's iGEM team. iGEM is the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition; this is a club that provides great opportunities to combine engineering and synthetic biology in the pursuit of solving a problem of our choosing. This year Mia and her team are developing a cervical precancer screening tool. She’s a former Wet Lab Chair that led the execution of lab protocols and guided other students in the lab. Currently, Mia is a Human Practices and Outreach Chair ensuring that uses ethical, regulatory, and efficacy considerations to guide project development. She will also continue to be a WIE tutor for the second year in a row. Moreover,  Mia is the only junior that has been promoted to a Peer Mentor Coordinator within the Sheila Rohra WIE Connect Peer Mentoring Program.
