Marco Martinez

2024-2025 Scholar

As a dedicated student at the University of Maryland, Marco Martinez is currently serving his second consecutive semester as the Philanthropy Chair for Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), where he has successfully organized numerous events to raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network and other charitable causes. His commitment to academics is reflected in his role as a tutor for Academic Success & Tutorial Services (ASTS), where he assists students in Biochemistry I (BCHM461) and Organic Chemistry II (CHEM241).

In addition to his academic and leadership roles, Marco contributes to genetic hermaphrodite research with mangrove killifish as part of Eric Haag's research team at the University of Maryland. His passion for neurology has also led him to intern under Dr. Ruwani Gunawardane, MD, at the Center for Brain and Neurocare, where Marco has gained invaluable experience observing and understanding neurological disorders such as Migraines, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's Disease, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and Peripheral Neuropathy. Marco has also had the opportunity to learn about neuroanatomy, brain MRIs, and perform MOCA exams with patients. Beyond academics, he is an active member of the University of Maryland's Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Boxing clubs, and serves as an assistant instructor for children's classes at Berwyn Heights BJJ.
