My name is Jhoany Maldonado. I did not grow up privileged. I was born in the mountains of Puerto Rico, whose family shortly after my second birthday, relocated and settled in Massachusetts. Growing up I was part of the statistical ‘norms’ of underdeveloped communities to include being a teenage parent. I wanted something more for my family and joined the Army to earn a better quality of life. I learned to not only be a leader in the Army, but I learned how to work in a diverse team. During my time in the Army, my son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through my son’s diagnosis I realized I was shortly becoming very familiar with children with developmental needs. I learned their triggers, habits, redirecting methods, their medications, but most importantly the unique personalities that they all carried with them.

As a Hispanic female I know what it is like firsthand to not get the proper medical treatment, advice, or resources through discriminatory practices. Those actions impacted me in my youth to thrive. Through my experiences I found that my calling is to be the best medical professional that I can be for my community as well as those who are underserved. I hope to address the ill narratives of history that segregate Americans every day. I plan to do that by providing the best service I can to all my future patients regardless of their demographics whether that be as a doctor or physician assistant. Thank you for allowing me to share a little bit about myself with you.
