The Department of Resident Life is committed to creating opportunities and experiences focused on learning, growing, and mattering for every person, on every floor, in every community. Living on campus at UMD, residents create inclusive communities through actively engaging with each other. Residents have opportunities to explore their own and others' identities, learn how identity influences interactions and living in a community, and develop skills to interact and live with others.

This intern will support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion unit in the Department of Resident Life. This intern will work on the development of environmental and social justice resources, staff training, topic specific dialogue opportunities, workshops, and educational content that supports the engagement of students in understanding their contributions to a more just and sustainable world. This intern will assume an active leadership role in developing and maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment in the residence halls while assisting students in their education, personal growth; and sense of belonging in the residence hall community and at the University of Maryland.

Prerequisite: Applicants must have completed WEID300: Intergroup Dialogue Facilitator Development & Practicum prior to applying to position.

This intern will support the Department of Residential Facilities (ORF) in its efforts to .enhance sustainable outcomes within the residential community on campus. DRF provides· facilities oversight for almost all Division of Student Affairs spaces and in essence, manages a small town. The team is excited to support student curiosity and interest in exploring energy and utility problems and solutions. Examples of some of the types of analysis include completing lighting surveys and looking at opportunities to retrofit lighting to LED technology; performing energy audits and exploring ways to reduce energy consumption and applying new technologies that improve energy efficiency.

This intern will support the Department of Residential Facilities (ORF) in its efforts to enhance sustainable outcomes in the day-to-day operational activities within .defined DSA spaces and will work with the team to evaluate the ORF Vehicle Fleet. This intern will be actively engaged in setting up and evaluating waste audits; will complete an assessment of the current vehicle fleet, and will lead the way in completing landscape/hardscape surveys. Depending on the time available, this intern may also have the opportunity to examine sustainable building design and work in conjunction with the ORF Planning and Construction team.

This intern will work collaboratively with both the UMD Catering team and the C&VS team to identify the roadblocks that currently exist with the "Green Catering Event" program and will identify possible solutions for the two departments to consider. The intern will have an opportunity to review current outcomes; research sustainable packaging and tableware; conduct client surveys, and complete a cost analysis for proposed solutions.

This intern will support sustainability communications efforts within Dining Services and will help improve visibility and transparency of the department's goals and progress. This intern will propose and draft content for publications - both on and off campus and will work closely with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications to expand reach through website content, social media and engagement opportunities in the dining halls.

This intern will support the Green Dining team in its efforts to enhance sustainability awareness and outcomes in current Green Dining programs - including, the Farmer's Market, Terp Farm, The Campus Pantry and special events in dining halls and around campus. This intern will work closely with the Green Dining Manager to explore new opportunities and to explore BIG 10 Best Practice activities from other universities. This intern will outreach to students in similar roles at other BIG 10 schools to exchange ideas.

This is a student supervisory position that is responsible for the coordination and development of the Terp to Terp Campus ReUse Store. As a detailed and meticulous position, the Student Manager .will be involved in all coordination and development of the supervision of Program Assistants, volunteer program, general services, engagement, events, client relations, inventory management, and planning needed to run Terp to Terp. Student Managers will work with various campus departments/office/units/student orgs (i.e. Dining Services, Resident Life, Dean of Students, DFSL, RHA, SGA etc.) to ensure the promotion of Terp to Terp services to increase usage by to students' in need of essential living items while educating and encouraging social responsibility that reduces waste generation, implement and maintain a year-round collection process that collects unused or gently used essential living items made available at no cost to any UMD student and execute engagement and outreach plans that will provide education to the campus and the local community.

Position start date will be end of August 2024

This position will act as the "connector" for the interns identified in this proposal. Working with support from the AVP for Team Living/Learning and the DSA Sustainability Working Group, this position will engage with all interns on a weekly basis; will coordinate and host Intern meetings throughout the year and will coordinate the end of year assessment and presentations. Additionally, the Manager will have the opportunity to use this experience as a research type project where their work can be used to develop critical thinking papers and presentations that can influence broader applications at other colleges and universities.
