Description: False Monarchy artist Kyle Kogut and curator Raino Isto will be holding a conversation in the Stamp Gallery on March 15, beginning at 6:30pm. Together, they will explore the work on view in the exhibition, and the ways that the themes and symbols of False Monarchy relate to Kogut's practice more broadly. False Monarchy is a solo exhibition featuring the work of Philadelphia-based artist Kyle Kogut. Kogut uses the practices and symbols of occultism and the ubiquitous iconography of auto industry kitsch to explore the contemporary politics of American myth and despair. False Monarchy is on view at the Stamp Gallery at the University of Maryland, College Park, through March 17, 2018.
False Monarchy: Opening Reception and Performance

In False Monarchy, Philadelphia-based artist Kyle Kogut uses the practices and symbols of occultism, the visual culture of the Northern Renaissance, and the ubiquitous iconography of the auto industry to explore the contemporary politics of American myth and despair. This solo exhibition presents a collection of new installations, sculptures, and drawings by Kogut, all examining the disturbing effects of America’s continued attachment to the myth of heavy industry as a miraculous source of economic growth and consumer euphoria.
At the opening reception for the exhibition, the artist and a group of performers will stage an interactive performance and ritual with live music. The event is free and open to the public. The reception will be held on January 31, 6:30-8:30pm in the Stamp Gallery, with the performance beginning at 7:00pm.
