Bauckman Family Current-Use Scholarship for Veterans

About the Bauckman Family Current-Use Scholarship for Veterans

The Bauckman Family Current-Use Scholarship for Veterans was established in September, 2021 by Mark Bauckman '80 and Thomas Bauckman '82 to provide merit-based scholarships for undergraduate students who are military veterans enrolled at the University of Maryland at College Park.  This scholarship is in memory of their parents, Theodore and Joanne Bauckman, who provided advanced educational opportunity for all of their children, including three alumni of University of Maryland. Three additional University of Maryland graduates are counted among their grandchildren.

About The Bauckman Family

Theodore Bauckman graduated from Cornell University in 1953, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and a commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Following his commissioning, he served on the USS Mullany (DD-528) with the 6th and 7th Fleets prior to being honorably discharged in 1955.  That same year, he married Joanne Bourne, his high school sweetheart and wife for 54 years until his passing in 2009.  Ted and Joie passed a legacy of citizenship, patriotism and duty to their descendants which directly influenced two of their sons to serve in the U. S. military.

Mark Bauckman was the first in his family to attend and graduate from University of Maryland, College Park.  He majored in Economics and graduated (Summa Cum Laude) in 1980 with a strong focus on transportation. His career plans soon changed, and he subsequently attended and graduated from Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI accepting his commission in 1981 as a U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer like his father.  For the next five years, he served on active duty on two different ships in the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet.  In 1986, he requested a release from active duty to pursue a business career, but immediately transferred to the Naval Reserve where he served for another 20 years in a variety of warfare positions, retiring as a Navy Captain in 2006.  Mark remains active in the veteran community in San Diego and has served on the University of Maryland Veterans Scholarship Selection Committee.  He has been married to his wife Janie for over 30 years. Her parents both served in the military during World War II and years after.

Thomas Bauckman entered the University of Maryland in 1979 and graduated in December 1982. He received a reserve commission in the U. S.  Air Force through Officer Training School and then served as a navigator in the KC-135 and E-4B aircraft. He accepted a regular commission in the USAF in 1986 and served  for nearly 21 years. He is an avid Terp fan.
